Phillipe Starck meets William the IVth, with help from some design ingenuity: this folding table represented an intriguing challenge for Dean. The client, for whom space was at premium, requested a side table that could be stored against a wall. The table had to pull out to seat eight people, and the expansion leaves had to be incorporated into the table's design. Always one for a challenge, Dean engineered a scissor-like base which pulled out smoothly, allowing the three hinged leaves to fold out and lock into position. Hidden spring-mounted nylon rollers in the cast aluminum feet allow the table to glide gently across the floor without marring.

Because the client requested an unusual clash of styles in the piece, Dean combined tight William the IVth details with the looser, rounded form of Phillipe Starck's designs in each of the eight different legs. The modern teardrop motif in two shades of maple is another demonstration of skill: notice how the sections of the motif line up perfectly on the edge of the table when it's folded, as well as when it's open.
