A signature piece for Dean, this davenport typifies his versatility. Sparked by a client's request for a small desk to match her carved chair, Dean's research turned up this davenport style, popularized by the Victorians in the 1850's. Like secretaries, they feature writing space with drawers and cubbyholes, but have deep side drawers and a lower profile which suits a small space.
Dean interpreted the davenport form here in fine crotch mahogany, edged with cut fretwork and featuring a secret compartment. To coordinate with the client's chair, a matching rosette motif was hand-carved into the curved brackets that support the pull-out writing surface, and brass candle sconces were incorporated, too.
